Clear Facts

  • California transplants in McKinney, Texas, are voting for Democrats in key races.
  • These newcomers cite lower costs as their reason for moving yet support higher taxes and expanded government programs.
  • Longtime Texas residents express concern that the influx could shift the state’s political balance.

McKinney, Texas, has become a focal point for voters leaving California in recent years. Election results in several races may hinge on how these newcomers cast their ballots.

One transplant, Oren, explained that he moved for lower living costs. He said he still supports Democratic policies including more social services, public transit, and programs for transgender children.

When asked why he would recreate the high-tax environment he left behind, Oren remained unmoved.

“It’s in the Constitution,” Daniel, another former California resident, told Fox News Digital. “We can go anywhere we want. It’s meant to be that way.”

Daniel also shrugged off concerns that transplants are altering Texas politics. “Things change,” he said.

Two additional California natives interviewed in the same town expressed similar views. They saw no contradiction in voting to expand government after fleeing high taxes and regulations.

Terry, a longtime McKinney resident, voiced the opposite perspective. “I love to see the growth, and there’s a lot of it, but if they bring Democratic politics with them, then we stand to lose the whole thing bringing people here.”

Clint, visiting from Oklahoma, shared her concern. “I cannot comprehend why someone would move from a state because there’s high taxes and then come down here and vote for high taxes,” he told Fox News Digital. “And I’ve asked them to explain it to me, but they just cuss me out.”

The pattern extends beyond Texas. Arizona, Montana, and West Virginia report similar inflows of liberal voters from high-tax states. Unchecked illegal immigration has also shifted Texas demographics leftward over decades.

Republicans in red states now face the task of preserving traditional governance while welcoming new residents. Without that effort, the political advantages gained from population shifts could be reversed at the ballot box.
