Clear Facts

  • The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski following a criminal referral from the Department of Homeland Security inspector general.
  • President Trump stated that he expects his staff to act honestly and that he would support DOJ action if dishonesty is found.
  • Lewandowski has not been contacted by federal investigators and denies any wrongdoing.

President Donald Trump has long emphasized that accountability must apply to every member of his team.

The investigation stems from a referral sent by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, not from any direct accusation by the White House.

“All I know is I want my people to be honest,” Trump said.

“If they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted,” Trump warned, adding that dishonesty amounts to “stealing from me as president.”

“They are stealing from me. So I want my people to be honest. And if they’re not honest, I’ll have my DOJ go and do whatever they have to do,” he added.

Corey Lewandowski served as a senior adviser to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and remains a trusted political ally of the president.

A representative for Lewandowski told The Wall Street Journal that he has not been contacted by the Justice Department and denied any wrongdoing.
