Elon Musk, known for his unconventional approach, made a striking entrance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday evening. Wearing a “Dark Gothic MAGA” hat, a black coat, and sunglasses, Musk wielded a chainsaw alongside Argentinian President Javier Milei. This dramatic display symbolized their shared commitment to cutting down government waste.

During his speech, Musk addressed a variety of topics, including updates from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he leads. He discussed the intense opposition he faces from Democrats and the media, as well as the critical need to curb wasteful spending in the federal government.

Musk revealed ongoing discussions with President Donald Trump about the possibility of providing tax refunds to U.S. citizens. These refunds would come from the savings achieved by DOGE’s efforts to eliminate government waste.

“I wasn’t really that interested in being political. It’s just like there was at a certain point no choice,” Musk explained. He emphasized that the actions being taken with the support of the president and government agencies are essential for preserving programs like Medicare and Social Security.

“A country is no different from a person,” Musk noted. “A country overspends, a country goes bankrupt in the same way as a person who overspends usually goes bankrupt.”

Musk confirmed that he is working with the president on the idea of issuing “DOGE dividends” to taxpayers. “I talked to the president, and he’s supportive of that and so it sounds like, you know, that’s something we’re going to do,” he stated.

He also took aim at the Biden administration, accusing them of using taxpayer dollars to promote their ideological goals, including increasing the number of illegal immigrants in the country. “You don’t actually have to assume some grand conspiracy, you just need to look at basic incentives,” Musk said.

Since Trump’s return to the White House, Musk has been a target of criticism from Democrats and the media due to his role with DOGE and efforts to dismantle wasteful government programs. These programs often align with liberal priorities such as diversity, equity, and inclusion.

DOGE claims to have already saved $44 billion in taxpayer dollars. Musk shared his surprise at the scale of government expenditures and how quickly savings can be achieved when competence and care are applied.

“People ask me, what’s the most surprising thing that you’ve encountered when you got to DC?” Musk remarked. “Well, the most surprising thing is the scale of the expenditures and actually, how easy it is to – when you add caring and competence where it was absent before – you can actually save billions of dollars sometimes in the span of an hour.”

Musk also addressed the criticism he receives from the media and the left, humorously noting, “They’re always saying like ‘threat to our democracy.’ But if you just replace democracy with bureaucracy, yeah, it makes a lot of sense.”

Reflecting on his motivations, Musk shared, “I grew up in South Africa, but my morality was informed by America. I read comic books, you know, played Dungeons and Dragons and I watched American T.V. shows, and it seemed like America cared about being the good guys, you know? About doing the right thing.”
