Clear Facts

  • Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has called on residents to “resist” the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
  • Federal troops have been deployed to control riots in Los Angeles, sparked by ICE raids, which Johnson condemns as a “war on our culture.”
  • Chicago Police Department has stated it will not assist in immigration enforcement efforts.

In a bold move, Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson has urged the city’s residents to stand firm against the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement operations. This call to action comes in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy federal troops to manage riots in Los Angeles, which erupted following Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

At a recent news conference, Johnson criticized the federal crackdown, labeling it as a “war on our culture” and emphasized the importance of resistance.

“I am counting on all of Chicago to resist in this moment. Because whatever particular vulnerable group is targeted today, another group will be next,” he stated. Johnson further encouraged the use of various forms of dissent, whether through legal avenues or public protests, asserting, “This is a necessary fight for all of us to be able to push back. Whether we use the courts or whether we continue to protest or raise our voices, dissent matters in this moment.”

The city anticipates an increase in ICE raids, with federal agents expected to target workplaces using “tactical teams” and “mini tanks,” as noted by Johnson’s chief of staff, Cristina Pacione-Zayas. Despite a significant budget shortfall, Chicago has allocated over $600 million in public funds to support migrants since 2022.

Tensions have already escalated in the city, with anti-ICE demonstrations leading to the arrest of seventeen individuals. These protests, which resulted in clashes with police and vandalism, underscore the city’s volatile atmosphere.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling has made it clear that local law enforcement will not participate in immigration enforcement. He stated, “not something we do,” reinforcing the city’s stance against federal coordination.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul also criticized Trump’s deployment of the military in Los Angeles, calling it “unlawful, unconstitutional and undemocratic.” This sentiment was echoed by California’s Democratic leaders, who have attributed the violence to the president’s actions.

In a related development, Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, along with governors from other sanctuary states, defended their policies before the House Oversight Committee. These discussions highlight the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and state autonomy.

      I’m quite certain I don’t stink!
The president is overstepping or the courts wouldn’t have placed injunctions to stop his actions. And there wouldn’t
be lawful, peaceful protests literally all over this wonderful
      country.

It’s time for the heads of state to comply. The Citizen majority have spoken. They forget whom they actually work for.
