Costco Downsizing Major Item, Sparks Consumer Debate
Clear Facts
- Costco, the multinational retailer, might be considering a reduction in the size of its well-known bakery muffins, based on a Reddit post allegedly from a Costco employee.
- The supposed change involves selling the muffins in eight packs instead of in the current format of two six-packs of large muffins.
- While Costco has yet to confirm these rumors, the potential muffin size reduction has ignited a variety of reactions among customers, with some feeling shocked and others supporting the change.
Costco, a brand that never seems to stand still, may be preparing for another significant shift in its product line. Earlier this year, it drew attention when it changed the packaging for its popular $4.99 rotisserie chickens. Now, there’s talk of a potential alteration in one of Costco’s cherished items.
The rumor began on Reddit this week, suggesting that the international warehouse chain could be downsizing its famous bakery muffins. These muffins, known for their cake-like proportions instead of standard muffin size, may soon be changing their appearance if the rumors turn out to be accurate.
“RIP: Giant Costco Muffin!” the alleged Costco employee wrote on Reddit. “Introducing: smaller eight-pack of muffins to replace the giant ones we’ve loved for years.”
The Reddit post included an image comparing the traditional large muffin tins to the new, smaller tins. In addition to the size reduction, the muffins are also speculated to be sold in packs of eight, replacing the current system of purchasing two six-packs.
Interestingly, two new smaller muffin flavors – lemon raspberry and butter pecan – have already shown up in some Costco stores, available in packs of eight. The Reddit post suggests that all muffin flavors, including favorites like Blueberry and Double Chocolate, may soon follow the same pattern.
“The big muffins are iconic. Are they really going away?” a Reddit user asked.
“This is depressing. Is it some kind of poorly timed April Fool’s trick? I adore these muffins,” another Redditor expressed, sharing their disappointment over the potential loss of these giant treats.
Regardless, not everyone is upset about the potential change. Some customers expressed a preference for smaller, more manageable muffins.
“Those huge muffins are too big for me personally. As long as they taste just as good, I’ll gladly accept some smaller regular size muffins,” a shopper commented.
Another added, “Honestly, this will get me to buy them more. Those things were just too large.”
However, it’s important to note that these are still unverified reports. Costco has neither confirmed the rumored change nor reacted to inquiries about this potential shift. Nonetheless, the strong consumer reactions imply that the potential makeover of the muffins is already causing a stir.

I would love to buy the muffins and other baked goods. However, it’s only my husband and I so the double packaging are way too much for us. We don’t have enough freezer space to save the extra product. Also, after being frozen they don’t taste as good as fresh.

At some point, Costco will have to face the facts and accept Biden’s caused “shrinkflation”.
Costco is our best way to fight the rampant inflation we are faced with.
