  • COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death in the United States.
  • The disease has caused about 1,970 deaths in the U.S. per day — which is more deaths per day than cancer (1,641) or heart disease (1,774).
  • It was only last week when the disease was reported as the third leading cause of death in the US.

Coronavirus, which causes the deadly disease COVID-19, is now the leading cause of death in the United States.

According to a Newsweek report, physician Maria Danilychev published a new graph on Tuesday that showed how COVID-19 has caused about 1,970 deaths in the U.S. per day — which is more deaths per day than cancer (1,641) or heart disease (1,774).

Danilychev’s report last week showed COVID-19 only as the third leading cause of death, taking the place of accidents, with average deaths of around 748 per day.

The daily average of COVID-19 fatalities rapidly accelerated starting from March 22, when it started to overtake the daily average deaths for flu, pneumonia, kidney disease, suicide, and other leading causes.

While the disease is now the leading cause of nationwide fatalities, the heaviest hit localities are now experiencing a decrease in the number of cases.

On Thursday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) reported that the city’s hospitalization rates are lowering for now.

The projected total number of COVID-19 fatalities has also been decreased to 60,000 estimated deaths by August — a significant decrease from early projections that estimated around 100,000 to 240,000 fatalities.

Anthony Fauci, a leading member of President Trump’s coronavirus task force, explained on Thursday that the dramatically lower numbers are estimated by newer and more data-driven models such as one from the University of Washington.

Fauci explained, “Models are really only as good as the assumptions that you put into the model.” He added that the new data provided by hospitals and facilities show a better outlook for the country.

He also attributed the decreasing numbers to the American public’s response in following social distancing guidelines.

Fauci applauded the citizens for doing “a really terrific job just buckling down and doing those physical separations and adhering to those guidelines.”

He then highlighted the importance of remaining cautious and continuing to follow the social distancing guidelines.
