GOP leadership concerns grow as McCarthy and McConnell clash

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Tensions have been rising between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy over the government spending bill.
- McConnell has pushed for its passage before Christmas, but McCarthy wants to wait until the new House GOP majority takes office.
- Some Republican lawmakers have reportedly distanced from McCarthy when discussing the government spending bill.
Republicans have expressed leadership concerns as tensions rise between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy over the omnibus spending bill.
The spending package aims to prevent a shutdown of the federal government, prompting McConnell to plan its passage before Christmas. But McCarthy fought against the pressure to vote before the holidays.
McCarthy said that they could vote for a stopgap measure first to delay the shutdown until January, which is after the new House GOP majority takes office.
The House Minority Leader, who has aimed to be the next House Speaker, pointed out, “Why would you ever move forward when there’s a change in power in 21 days where Republicans would have a stronger hand? We wouldn’t be talking about adding more money. We’d talk about decreasing.”
Last week, McCarthy told Fox News that it is “wrong” to work on a larger spending deal before the new Congress convenes.
McConnell allies in the Senate said McCarthy’s criticism of the omnibus bill was “not helpful.”
Back on November 29, McConnell claimed that McCarthy was on board with passing the spending package by the end of the year. McConnell said that the discussion was made during a White House meeting with President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
McConnell said at the time, “We had a really good meeting. Laid out the challenges that we’re all collectively facing here. I think there’s widespread agreement that we’d be better off with an omnibus than a [continuing resolution], but there are some significant hurdles to get over to do that.”
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for McCarthy told The Hill that he was never on board with the bill’s passage during or after the said meeting.
Some Republicans reportedly expressed concerns that the tensions between the two leaders could create challenges in Congress until next year.
The next House Speaker could also face difficulty in passing spending bills and may have to rely on Democrat votes, since some conservatives might not vote for any appropriations legislation.
McConnell ally Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) stated, “He’s got a very thin majority and I know he knows it’s going to be hard to do some of the things they want to do.”
Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) of the Senate Appropriations Committee noted that it could get difficult for McCarthy since “a lot of his dissidents are going to be no on anything.”
Semafor reported that some senators have been distancing from McCarthy when discussing the government spending bill.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-Nev.) said, “I just think for Kevin’s sake, even though he’s not asking for it, I think some Republicans just feel like we should relieve him of that burden.”

Why do they have to have so many “spending bills”? Why can’t they sit down in February, make out a budget that will last until Jan. of the next, and stick to it. Plus, stop sending money to other countries. As far as Ukraine goes- screw them. They contribute nothing to the U.S.. Anything that is goes into the Biden’s pocket. Let Russia have it!

The federal fiscal year actually begins and end the last day of September each year. Actually the budget should be firm by the end of September. But politicians being politicians, when elections fall in November and there might be a change in power and thus ability to influence what is financed and what is not, they want to wait so the party in power can influence how the budget is weighted, what is supported and what is not.

this is so very true. Especially McConnell, he needs to go and should have been gone a long time ago. He subsides with the Demo’s to much and gets nothing in return. He might as well be a Demo. It is no wonder the GPO did not do better in the mid term elections. If McConnell was no longer the House minority leader the election would have much more favorable. McConnell hates Trump and this is a big problem. When personalities get in the way, then it becomes a big problem. Now you see the results of this problem, you loose.

It’s not that hard to figure out ! As long as DING-DON stood a chance to retain his role of commander in grief there were alot of idiots in Congress that were willing to back him to the hilt. Now that he’s been caught is so many crimes alit if them arent willing to allow him to damage their careers any more than he already have… He’s done and there are some people that are foolish enough to go down with him and those are the people that don’t have to he sense to admit they’re wrong…
The other side of the isle isn’t much better…
WE ALL DESERVE Much GETTER THAN WHAT We’ve HAD FOR A FEW TERMS NOW…

David Dutra – what are you talking about? McConnell and his allies are all RINOS; McCarthy says he has changed but I still consider him a RINO but he is trying to represent the Americans’ interest. I agree with McCarthy on this one – after Biden has passed so many bills sending trillions into everybody’s hands but We The People, Biden (and Schumer) could have started on the Fiscal Bill long before the end of the Fiscal period – something they do every year! And since the Republicans are going to take over the House (and the money) after the 1st, I think it should be delayed until after the 1st of January – let’s face it, this is a HUGE bill – probably more than We The People want to spend (including the $50 billion or $37.7 trillion) designed to go to the Ukraine!
As for McCarthy & McConnell fighting – let them fight; after the new year, there will be an election and that will settle whether McCarthy stays in charge or Biggs wins!
