Greenland’s leader has declined President Trump’s suggestion to send an American hospital ship to the territory, highlighting the strength of their public healthcare system.
Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded with a direct message urging the president to communicate respectfully and directly with Greenland’s government.
“We say no thank you from here,” Nielsen wrote.
“President Trump’s idea of sending an American hospital ship here to Greenland has been noted. But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens.”
He contrasted healthcare in Greenland with that of the United States, stating in America, “it costs money to go to the doctor.”
Nielsen stressed Greenland’s willingness to talk with the U.S., but asked that the conversation be professional.
“Talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media,” he wrote.
“Dialogue and cooperation require respect for decisions about our country being made here at home.”
President Trump previously announced plans to work with Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana on sending aid to Greenland following a medical evacuation from an American submarine.
Landry was appointed special envoy to Greenland in December and has worked with Trump on national security and diplomatic outreach in the Arctic.
He recently consulted NATO partners about expanding American influence in Greenland’s region.
The recent medical case involved a crew member flown by Danish Defense forces to a Greenlandic hospital in Nuuk.
The U.S. Navy operates hospital ships, including the USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort, which were last under repair in Alabama.
