Holiday travel could be impacted by winter storm this week [Video]

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

• Forecasters predicted a “significant winter storm” that could disrupt travel plans during the holiday week.
• An arctic cold front moving south of Canada could bring frigid temperatures, rain, snow, and strong winds that could last into Christmas weekend.
• Forecasters advised shoppers and travelers to plan ahead in case of possible disturbances.

Those shopping or traveling for the holidays could face difficulty amid a significant winter storm on track to bring heavy snow and strong winds to parts of the country.

According to FOX Weather, an arctic cold front moving from the south of Canada could bring frigid temperatures, rain, snow, and strong winds that could cause power outages and travel disruptions.

FOX Weather meteorologist Amy Freeze said that there is a strong likelihood for a “significant winter storm” as there is “more agreement on the forecast data.”

Freeze stated, “The timing right now is that this could last into Christmas weekend. For some, it’s a nightmare. For others, this could be dreaming of a white Christmas come true.”

On Wednesday, the Northern Rockies and northern Plains could experience light to moderate snow, which will then move south and east.

Between Thursday night and Saturday, there could be heavy snow from Oklahoma to the Great Lakes, caused by the formation of a powerful low-pressure system along the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Potentially damaging wind gusts and plunging temperatures could bring heavy rain and snow to the Northeast.

Jon Porter, AccuWeather’s Chief Meteorologist, stated, “Major East Coast storms over the decades have occurred in this type of setup, bringing the risk for heavy snow and rain, gusty winds, coastal flooding, severe thunderstorms, and even tornadoes on the southern side of the storm.”

Forecasters warned shoppers and travelers to plan ahead in case the winter storm disrupts this week’s holiday plans.
