House Speaker Mike Johnson remains hopeful about advancing President Trump’s major legislative initiative, despite facing a temporary roadblock from a faction of House Republicans.

On Wednesday, Johnson initiated a series of votes to push forward the president’s “one big, beautiful” bill, but the process was halted for over three hours as discussions took place with dissenting GOP members.

Johnson stated, “There’s a lot of forward momentum and we’re very optimistic about the outcome.” He emphasized the importance of the bill, noting that “most of our agenda is wrapped up into this legislation, so it must pass.”

The delay in passing the bill stems from concerns raised by a group of House conservatives. They argue that the Senate-amended version of the bill would significantly increase budget deficits and fails to eliminate green energy subsidies promptly.

Republican Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson, initially a critic, has shifted his stance, indicating his support for the Senate-amended bill. He remarked, “I wish it was a little better product, but I think it’s as good as we’re going to get.”

However, not all are convinced. Members of the House Freedom Caucus, including Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy, have expressed dissatisfaction with the Senate’s modifications. Roy stated, “We were not happy with what the Senate produced,” and emphasized the need to address a $600 billion deficit concern.

HFC chair Andy Harris echoed these sentiments, stating, “The bottom line is, this is not ready for prime time.” He stressed the necessity of further negotiations with the Senate to align the bill with the House’s budget framework.

Despite these challenges, House GOP leadership remains optimistic. They argue that the core elements of the original House bill are largely preserved in the Senate’s version.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise highlighted this point, stating, “When you look at the whole totality of the bill, still over 85% of what the House passed a few weeks ago is still in this final product.”

The White House has countered the deficit concerns by focusing on the potential economic growth the bill could generate. President Trump emphasized this on social media, writing, “Nobody wants to talk about GROWTH, which will be the primary reason that the Big, Beautiful Bill will be one of the most successful pieces of legislation ever passed.”

As the legislative process continues, the outcome remains uncertain. However, Speaker Johnson and GOP leaders are working diligently to unify their party and ensure the bill’s passage.
