Kyrsten Sinema leaves Democratic Party in Senate shake-up

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona announced Friday that she is leaving the Democratic Party.
- Sinema confirmed on Friday that she has registered as an independent.
- The move will shake up the Senate three days after Democrats secured a 51-49 majority.
Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema Left the Democratic Party to become an independent, just three days after the Democrats narrowly won control of the Senate.
In a tweet Friday, the senator wrote that she was declaring her “independence from the broken partisan system in Washington and formally registering as an Arizona Independent.”
According to a senior Biden administration official, the White House learned of Sinema’s intention to leave the Democratic Party “mid-afternoon Thursday.”
Sinema has not stated whether she will continue to caucus with the Democrats as an independent, like Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine do.
If Sinema still caucuses with Democrats, it would not change the party’s 51-49 majority. A Democratic aide said that the Arizona senator is expected to keep her committee assignments.
Sinema reportedly informed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer about her intentions to become independent on Thursday.
In a Friday op-ed in the Arizona Republic, Sinema cited increasingly partisan interests and radicalization of both parties as the reason for her departure.
“Americans are told that we have only two choices – Democrat or Republican – and that we must subscribe wholesale to policy views the parties hold, views that have been pulled further and further toward the extremes,” Sinema wrote in the op-ed.
Sinema also accuses mainstream political parties of being more concerned about blocking each other out than the well-being of their constituents.
“When politicians are more focused on denying the opposition party a victory than they are on improving Americans’ lives, the people who lose are everyday Americans,” Sinema wrote in the op-ed.
Sinema, who told Politico that she’s “never really fit into a box of any political party,” was known for not falling in line with the rest of the Democrats on key issues, most notably, in refusing to abolish the filibuster.

Sinema is concerned with losing her Senate seat next year.
She sat idly by as her state Arizona was invaded with illegal aliens.
In her conversation with Schumer – informing him of her transition to Independent, she was able to maintain her committee assignments – so obviously she will be caucusing with the Democrats.
Just a ploy in an attempt to appease voters for her lack of effort to stop the illegal aliens from over running Arizona.
If voters re elect her after her dismal performance – they are more than entitled to what they get…

Analysing her trayectory I think that this is a case of the syndrome of lack of attention. She is trying to look for republican votes that she will not get in the party that gave her the votes to be there. Democrats will be better off without her.

i do agree with her that the two parties are constantly at each others throats trying to best the other side and not really giving a damn about the american people but she is still democrite and will vote that way. it would great if she would think and act like a true indepentent and vote that way but i don’t think that is going to happen. Not a big deal considering the number of RINOs that vote for Biden’s destruction of our country.

More political theater to boost her chances of fooling moderates who don’t pay attention to her voting record and the policies she promotes. This is good timing for her — she’s just hijacking the news because Arizona’s elections this mid-term were obviously fraudulent so she needs to distance herself from the Democrats in addition to the 2020 elections in which her “win” is also highly suspect.
She also wants to distract from her current anti-American effort by pushing the “pathway to citizenship” for illegal aliens and keeping the borders wide open, which the Democrats hope to push thru in this lame duck session. She is now a DWII (Democrat Who Identifies as Independent). She is hell-bent on destroying America and along with Mark Kelly, neither of them actually represent Arizonans.

Sinema talks about the well-being of constituents while leaving the Democratic Party that elected her under that banner. And it’s well known that she voted for most of the Biden platform legislation as a Democrat in the Senate. So what’s her angle? We can only speculate, but it may be assumed she’s not concerned that she may lose Democratic campaign funds by leaving Democratic donors. Or, are her donors not Democrats and outside of any party label? She wouldn’t jeopardize reelection funding to become an Independent, so her funding source must be ‘independent’ for the most part. We’ll find out in 5 years when she runs again and gets little or no support from the Party she abandoned.
