New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued his first veto to block a bipartisan bill designed to improve security and prevent intimidation at educational institutions following a surge in antisemitic incidents.
The legislation would have required law enforcement to create safety plans for schools and universities.
It also aimed to prevent physical obstruction and interference during public demonstrations.
Mamdani argued that the definition of educational facilities was too broad.
He said it could impede the rights of people protesting against ICE or for Palestinian causes.
“This could impact workers protesting ICE or college students demanding their school divest from fossil fuels or demonstrating in support of Palestinian rights,”
Mamdani said in a statement.
Supporters of the bill said Jewish New Yorkers were targeted more frequently than all other groups combined.
They argued that immediate security intervention was necessary.
“The legislation is part of the Council-led Five-Point Action Plan to Combat Antisemitism,”
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin stated.
Critics said protecting students from harassment and physical threats should be a civic responsibility.
“The right to protest and the right to an education can and must coexist,”
the Simon Wiesenthal Center shared in a public response.
The City Council needs 33 votes to override the veto.
It could still move forward if three additional members join the original thirty supporters.
