In a bold move to consolidate his influence, Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is taking significant steps to shape the future of leftist politics in America. As the 2026 midterms loom on the horizon, Sanders is actively working with groups to empower young candidates with the skills and resources they need to run for office.

Sanders has teamed up with Run for Something, a political organization dedicated to recruiting and supporting young progressive candidates. This collaboration aims to ensure that these aspiring politicians are not left to fend for themselves. According to Jeremy Slevin, a senior adviser to Sanders, “We want to make sure that we’re not just going into these spaces and holding rallies and disappearing, and we’re not just asking people to run for office.”

The initiative has already attracted over 5,000 individuals who are exploring the possibility of seeking office through Sanders’ efforts. These potential candidates will receive comprehensive support, including training on campaign management essentials such as filing, hiring staff, setting fundraising deadlines, and establishing communication goals. Slevin emphasized that the goal is to equip candidates with the necessary tools to run effective campaigns.

Run for Something describes itself as “a safety net for new and exciting progressive leaders — at all stages of their journey — helping them run efficient, strategic, grassroots, driven campaigns while feeling supported throughout the process.” This partnership with Sanders aligns with his long-standing call for more Democrats and independents to enter the political arena.

Earlier this year, Sanders embarked on a nationwide tour titled “Fighting Oligarchy,” where he addressed large audiences about the importance of challenging the influence of oligarchs and corporate interests in America. This latest effort to train young candidates is a continuation of his mission to reshape the political landscape.

While Sanders’ office and Run for Something did not immediately respond to requests for comment, the impact of this initiative is already being felt. By positioning himself as a mentor and guide for the next generation of progressive leaders, Sanders is solidifying his role as a political kingpin in the leftist movement.
