Senate War Powers Vote Sparks MAGA Outrage

Clear Facts

  • The Senate is preparing for a final vote on a war powers resolution affecting President Trump’s authority over military actions in Venezuela.
  • Senator Josh Hawley joined Democrats and a handful of Republicans to advance the measure, drawing criticism from the MAGA base.
  • Trump and his supporters argue the War Powers Act undermines the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on whether President Trump must seek congressional approval before conducting future military operations in Venezuela. The proposal directly challenges executive authority, placing the president’s power in question.

Senator Josh Hawley, along with Senators Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Todd Young, supported the resolution with Democrats, triggering backlash from pro-Trump conservatives on social media earlier this January.

“The Republicans who sided with Democrats today on the War Powers resolution are STUPID & WEAK,” posted former Trump campaign aide Alex Bruesewitz to X after the procedural vote.

Bruesewitz also stated, “I was surprised and disappointed by Hawley for aligning himself with the anti-Trump faction and Democrats, particularly since he represents Missouri, one of the most staunchly pro-Trump states in the nation.”

Senator Hawley defended his vote, framing it as a constitutional requirement.

“My read of the Constitution is that if the President feels the need to put boots on the ground there in the future, Congress would need to vote on it,” Hawley posted to X.

President Trump warned those Republicans who supported the bill following the procedural vote that they “should never be elected to office again.” He argued that restricting his war powers could harm both American self-defense and national security, asserting, “the War Powers Act is Unconstitutional, totally violating Article II of the Constitution, as all Presidents, and their Departments of Justice, have determined before me.”

Conservative activists echoed Trump’s position, calling Hawley a “RINO” and urging voters to remember these senators’ votes in upcoming elections.

Hawley confirmed he has spoken with President Trump and officials including the Secretary of State about his concerns regarding American troops. He said he was assured there are no ground troops in Venezuela and there are no plans to send them.

The successful military operation in Venezuela speaks for itself. If our President’s actions are encumbered by requiring Congressional approval it will endanger our military with information leaks and loss of timing.

I agree with Glenda’s comments above. And I am disappointed to learn that Young, Hawley and Paul voted with the democrats on this. What were they thinking 🤔? Oh…they weren’t thinking!!!

“MAGA” is so inappropriate becausse the toadies criticizing Hawley, himself usually a Trumnp-butt-kisser, do not seem to put any value on the constitution; they are indeed merely an ignorant cult

MAGA is a whole lot better for the country than a Harris/Walz administration.
