In a significant move, House Oversight Chair James Comer has taken the step of subpoenaing Anthony Bernal, a former aide to Jill Biden, after Bernal refused to testify in the ongoing probe into President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities. This action underscores the committee’s determination to uncover any potential efforts to shield the president’s mental fitness from public scrutiny.

Comer highlighted Bernal’s close association with both Joe and Jill Biden, stating, “the Committee sought to understand if you contributed to an effort to hide former President Biden’s fitness to serve from the American people.” This connection raises questions about Bernal’s possible role in any attempts to obscure the president’s condition.

The subpoena, which requires Bernal to appear before the committee on July 16, was issued after Bernal’s legal team initially agreed to a voluntary interview but later reneged on that agreement. Comer expressed the necessity of Bernal’s testimony, saying, “You have refused the Committee’s request. However, to advance the Committee’s oversight and legislative responsibilities and interests, your testimony is critical.”

Despite the committee’s willingness to accommodate Bernal’s schedule, including accepting a new interview date and providing interview topics well in advance, Bernal’s legal team requested further delays. Comer detailed the timeline of communications, noting that on June 18, Bernal’s team sought an additional three-week postponement, which the committee denied.

In response to the committee’s firm stance, Bernal’s lawyer initially assured that “no subpoena is necessary.” However, Bernal’s subsequent refusal to appear voluntarily led to the issuance of the subpoena. Comer criticized Bernal for backing out of the testimony after previously agreeing to it, accusing him of avoiding accountability.

This development comes amid a broader investigation involving other Biden administration aides, including Neera Tanden, who testified about the use of the autopen. The committee remains committed to uncovering the truth behind Joe Biden’s cognitive state and any potential concealment efforts.
