Authorities responded Monday night after shots rang out at Dennis M. Lynch Arena during a game attended by local high school teams.
The shooter reportedly fired from the stands, resulting in chaos as spectators fled the arena for safety.
The gunman, whose name has not been made public, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement is not looking for any other suspects and the threat to the public is over.
Investigators say the event was domestic in nature, targeting the shooter’s own family according to initial reports.
A law enforcement source indicated the suspect killed his wife, shot two of his children, and also shot a third child who is recovering in the hospital.
The student hockey teams involved included the Coventry-Johnston group and a co-op team from St. Raphael, Providence Country Day, North Providence, and North Smithfield.
Witnesses described hearing “bangs” before realizing shots were fired and rushing for the exits.
An employee at a nearby Walgreens said people ran into the store during the chaos.

First responders classified four people as having life-threatening injuries.
Immediate medical updates on the hospitalized victims have not been released.
School officials acted swiftly to ensure the safety and reunification of student-athletes.
Coventry Superintendent Don Cowart confirmed in a message, “An officer from the Coventry Police Department is on scene and remains with our students.”
He added, “Staff are also with the team, and we are continuing to monitor the situation while reunification plans are coordinated.”
St. Raphael Academy informed families that none of their students were injured.
“There was a horrific incident with an active shooter. We have been told none of our SRA family was injured,” their statement read.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined local and state authorities to secure the scene.
ATF agents reported, “The public should avoid the area and follow the directions of Pawtucket police.”
Governor Dan McKee said, “I am praying for Pawtucket and everyone involved.”
