WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump hit back at Michelle Obama on Twitter after the former first lady called him “the wrong president” for the U.S.
  • Michelle Obama delivered a scathing speech at the 2020 Democratic National Convention Monday night, saying the president “is clearly in over his head. “
  • Responding to the speech, the president tweeted that he feels former President Barack Obama’s administration was “the most corrupt in history.”

Did President Donald Trump watch the virtual Democratic National Convention Monday night?

On Tuesday morning, the president responded to the DNC’s first keynote speaker, former first lady Michelle Obama, by launching a series of Twitter attacks against former President Barack Obama.

“Somebody please explain to @MichelleObama that Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren’t for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama,” Trump tweeted. “Biden was merely an afterthought, a good reason for that very late & unenthusiastic endorsement.”

He then went on to tout the economy under his presidency. “Sit back & watch!” he exclaimed.

Michelle Obama’s virtual speech to the convention presented a sharp case against the president, whom she said was in “clearly in over his head” amid the current challenges facing the country, including the coronavirus pandemic.

“Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership, or consolation, or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy,” said Michelle Obama.

Obama also used her speech to praise her husband’s former vice president.

“I know Joe,” Michelle Obama said in her speech. “He is a profoundly decent man guided by faith. He was a terrific vice president. He knows what it takes to rescue an economy, beat back a pandemic and lead our country.”

President Trump also responded to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who also delivered a speech at the DNC’s first night. The New York governor delivered a strong rebuttal to Trump on coronavirus; the president reacted by tweeting past praise Cuomo had given him and declared that thousands of New Yorkers died because of the governor’s “total incompetence.”

There will be three more nights of DNC before the Republicans hold their own virtual convention next week.
