Young Great White Shark Spotted Near Florida Coast

The shark known as Brass Bed was identified northeast of Cape Canaveral after her satellite tag transmitted a recent signal.

She started her journey in Canadian waters and is following a typical migration route for great whites seeking warmer waters in winter.

John Tyminski, senior data scientist at OCEARCH, explained,

“This is a common route that we see with white sharks at this time of year,” Tyminski said.

Winter habitats for great white sharks generally reach from the Carolinas down to Florida, with some moving even further into the Gulf.

“About two-thirds of the sharks that we’ve tagged have shown evidence of at some point going into the Gulf,” Tyminski said.

Brass Bed was tagged through cooperation between OCEARCH and Tancook Islands Marine Field Station, led by marine scientist Nigel Hussey, Ph.D.

Researchers noted that Brass Bed’s tag sends irregular pings, making her harder to track at times.

“She’s one that doesn’t seem to be spending much time at the surface, or at least her tag is not giving us very regular pings,” Tyminski said.

Her recent signals suggest steady movement south along Florida’s east coast, especially near the productive Cape Canaveral region.

“That Cape Canaveral area in general seems to be a fairly productive area,” Tyminski said.

He added, “There seems to be a lot of food around there. It’s generally considered a fairly sharky area.”

Experts say Brass Bed’s tag may not always send frequent signals since she does not often come near the surface.

Researchers will continue tracking her to see whether she remains in Florida waters or moves into the Gulf.
