WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former VP Joe Biden traveled to Houston on Monday to meet with the late George Floyd’s family ahead of his funeral on Tuesday.
  • The Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee listened, heard the pain, and shared in the family’s woes, according to a tweet by the family’s attorney, Ben Crump.
  • All people in the tweeted photo, including Biden, wear masks to prevent getting the coronavirus.

Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, met privately with the family of George Floyd in Houston on Monday ahead of his Tuesday funeral.

Floyd’s death has sparked protests across the country and the world in different forms— employee walkouts, demonstrations, and blacked-out profile photos on social media, among others. A number of political figures and celebrities have spoken up and joined Black Lives Matter protests.

Ahead of the funeral, VP Joe Biden went to Texas to offer his condolences to the Floyd family.  Instead of a video message during the rites, the VP chose to be there to avoid the disruption that his secret service protective detail would cause during the actual funeral.

Biden’s campaign staff has been grappling with safety measures during this coronavirus pandemic. In fact, the VP has not travelled that far from his home in Delaware to campaign. The farthest was for a speech last week in Philadelphia.

In a tweet by one of the Floyd family’s lawyers, Benjamin Crump, VP Joe Biden listened, heard the pain, and shared in the family’ woe for more than an hour.

“That compassion meant the world to the grieving family and that listening to one another is what will begin to heal America,” Crump tweeted.

The tweet also showed a photo of Biden, Crump, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Louisiana Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond, a past head of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Roger Floyd, George’s uncle, wearing face masks to avoid getting the coronavirus.

Floyd will be buried next to his mom at the Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland on Tuesday morning after the private funeral rites.
