President Donald Trump highlighted NASA’s plans to send the first nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars within the next two years.
The announcement came during his speech at the UP Summit held at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
“Within the next two years, NASA will launch the first-ever nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars,” Trump said.
“We’re going to be paving the way for astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the red planet,” he said.
The mission is designed to advance American space exploration and prepare the way for future crewed landings.
Trump tied the effort to the Artemis program, which aims to establish a lasting presence on the moon before moving on to Mars.
Artemis III is set for testing in Earth orbit in 2027, with a lunar landing attempt planned for early 2028.
Trump also released the American Declaration of Freedom in Space, declaring all of space open for American settlement, American civilization, and American freedom.
“Just this week, I issued the American Declaration of Freedom in Space, proclaiming all of space opened for American settlement, American civilization and American freedom,” Trump said.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman echoed the president’s goals before Trump’s remarks.
“We are going to venture farther into the solar system and move closer to that next giant leap,” Isaacman said.
He described the administration’s ultimate goal as the day “American astronauts plant the Stars and Stripes on Mars.”
Trump emphasized that America’s purpose is to build and to win in space.
“Our calling is to explore. Our purpose is to build, and our aim is always to win,” he said.
