Can a GOP-controlled House install Trump as Speaker? [Video]

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin says Republican members of the House could attempt to install Trump as the Speaker.
  • Far-right GOP members have repeatedly talked about the idea, Raskin said on “Face the Nation.”
  • GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz had also previously told supporters he would nominate the former president if the Republicans took the House.

Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin said far-right House members have talked “repeatedly” about voting to instate former President Donald Trump as Speaker should Republicans take control of the House.

Appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with Margaret Brennan, Raskin said pro-Trump Republicans want to get rid of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and could attempt to vote in Trump as his replacement. Raskin pointed to Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs as an example of people who have pushed back against voting McCarthy into Speakership.

Raskin said the GOP majority in the House could vote for Trump as speaker.

” So we know that the hard right Freedom Caucus people are in search of another candidate and one potential candidate whose name has been floated is Donald Trump himself,” Raskin said. “Because the Speaker of the House does not have to be a member of the House.”

Brennan pushed back, saying it was not a “real option” to make Trump the Speaker.

“Well, they talk about it repeatedly,” Raskin replied, noting that doing so “would pose a profound problem for their party.”

In July 2021, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz promised a crowd that he intended to nominate Trump to the House Speaker position in 2022 following the midterms. He told reporters a few months later he had spoken to Trump about the prospect.

Trump at one point expressed fleeting interest in the idea after it was proposed to him in an interview, but his previous spokesperson, Jason Miller, told reporters in June that Trump had “zero desire” to become Speaker of the House.

Trump is expected to announce a 2024 presidential bid on Tuesday.

The Constitution does not require the Speaker of the House to be an incumbent member and representatives have used this rule to vote for candidates, often in protest, from outside of the House. In 2019, former Rep. Anthony Brindisi voted for Joe Biden â€” who was vice president then to Barack Obama— as Speaker.

However, talk of Trump leading the House has become more popular over the years, and multiple Republicans, like his former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former adviser Steve Bannon, have also supported the idea of House Speaker Trump.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has already announced he wants to be House Speaker.

President Trump would be a more reliable speaker than McCarthy who flips and flops at will. This is a crucial time and strong leadership is desirable. that is not Mccarthy. It is President Trump. the left will do a tailspin at this suggestion. Maybe a meltdown.

Stop the indoctrination of our children by REMOVING them from the indoctrination centers (“public schools”)!

HOME SCHOOL them!! It’s NOT that hard!

Removing them from the public “schools” will DE-FUND the indoctrination centers and close them and get rid of the “teacher’s” unions! Then we can hopefully reinvent the schools to DO THEIR JOBS OF TEACHING!!

Why can’t republicans get along like the democrats (patriotic/United to their party) no matter what? Republicans, please get along & stopped the in-fighting amongst each other. Please give Mr McCarthy a chance to be House Speaker & nominate Mr Trump as Co-House Speaker. If this idea is feasible, why not do it?

If for no other reason than to watch Nancy’s face as she hands the gavel over to speaker Trump. Poetic justice at it’s finest.

Trump is the only one with the courage, will, and conviction to clean up the mess the democrats have gotten us into. Start with proper investigations into the corrupt Biden family\regime. Take them all down. Put them in the DC goolog where they have illigally held the J6 prisioners. I too would love to see Pelosi’s face when handing over the gavel. By the way maybe look into Pauly P’s investing habbits as well. Go Trump!!!!
