Democratic strategist Doug Schoen has voiced strong opposition to the “dark woke” strategy that some within his party are pushing. He believes this approach is a “big, big mistake” and fails to address the core issues facing the Democratic Party.

The use of profanity among Democrats has notably increased, particularly following a heated exchange between Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. This shift has been labeled as “dark woke,” a term that Schoen finds troubling.

Schoen has expressed concerns about this strategy, emphasizing that being crass and rude in political dialogue is a significant error. He stressed the importance for Democrats to propose alternative policies on critical issues like the economy, inflation, healthcare, Social Security, and Medicare. “So far, we have heard a lot of anger,” he added.

Schoen also criticized Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg for his plans to raise $20 million to challenge incumbent Democrats in primaries, instead of focusing on defeating Republicans.

“The fact that we elected a vice chair of the Democratic Party, David Hogg, who is raising $20 million to beat Democratic incumbents, not elect Democrats to beat Republicans, but beat Democratic incumbents in primaries, tells you how divided and pulverized we are,” Schoen remarked. He highlighted the lack of a cohesive message, strategy, and plan within the party, noting that “all we have driving us is raw anger.”

Former Clinton advisor James Carville has echoed Schoen’s concerns, criticizing Hogg for targeting incumbent Democrats while holding a leadership position in the DNC.

The Democratic Party has faced backlash for its increased use of profanity, with critics arguing that the party is not offering viable alternatives to former President Donald Trump’s proposals or addressing voters’ concerns. The conduct of Democrats during Trump’s March 4 address to Congress, where they remained seated and rarely applauded, even during moments of bipartisan significance, has also been criticized.

Schoen reflected on the past, stating, “Right now, it’s a group of angry people who oppose Donald Trump. When I worked for Bill Clinton, we were a centrist party offering alternatives to the Republican Gingrich revolution.”

He concluded, “Right now, it’s just raw anger.”
