Initially, Musk reacted to Trump’s comments by stating that SpaceX would “begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.” This response was prompted by Trump’s post on social media, where he suggested that the government could save “Billions and Billions of Dollars” by terminating Musk’s governmental subsidies and contracts.

However, Musk later reconsidered his stance. A user on social media advised Musk to “cool off and take a step back for a couple days.” Musk responded positively, stating, “Good advice. Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon.”

The Dragon spacecraft is integral to NASA’s operations, as it holds billions in contracts to transport astronauts to and from the ISS. This capability allows NASA to maintain a continuous presence at the station until its planned retirement in 2030. Recently, SpaceX facilitated the safe return of NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who spent nine months aboard the ISS.

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has been pivotal in reviving U.S. crewed spaceflight. According to SpaceX, it is “capable of carrying up to 7 passengers to and from Earth orbit, and beyond.” It is also the first private spacecraft to transport humans to the space station and the only one currently capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed disappointment in Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which Musk referred to as a “disgusting abomination.”

The bill, a comprehensive package reflecting much of Trump’s legislative agenda, faced criticism from Musk, particularly over the removal of the electric vehicle (EV) mandate. Trump’s response suggested that Musk’s discontent stemmed from this change.
