WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former Defense Secretary William Cohen criticized President Donald Trump’s administration for imploring a “dictatorship” government.
  • Cohen denounced Trump’s firing of top Pentagon officials amid his reelection loss, arguing that the president has politicized the agency.
  • Trump continues to spread baseless claims that the election was “rigged.”

On Tuesday, former Defense Secretary William Cohen lambasted President Donald Trump for running a “dictatorship” type of government as he continues to be stubborn and hostile to admit his loss against Democratic presidential rival Joe Biden.

“We’re witnessing the decimation of the democratic institutions which the American people have come to expect will be non-political in terms of our national security,” Cohen told CNN’s Don Lemon about his opinion on Trump’s removal of Pentagon officials.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier Tuesday told the media that “there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration.”

Lemon asked Cohen to comment on Pompeo’s failure to recognize the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

“My reaction is the way they are conducting themselves is more akin to a dictatorship than a democracy,” he told Lemon.

“And I think the State Department has been politicized just like the DOD has tried to be politicized, and what we’ve done to undermine the intelligence community and other agencies.”

“I think it’s consistent with what has been taking place for four years now,” Cohen continued.

Trump, who continuously bombarded baseless accusations about widespread voter fraud, lauded Pompeo on Twitter.

“That’s why Mike was number one in his class at West Point!” the caption wrote as the president retweeted a video clip of Pompeo’s statement.

Last Saturday, Biden was declared as President-elect by various media networks and news organizations. Trump, however, said that the election “is far from ever” and sought legal actions to contest the results.

A former Republican senator representing Maine, Cohen was at the helm of the Pentagon during former President Bill Clinton’s administration.
