WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • In an op-ed in USA Today, former Republican Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan expressed his support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
  • Snyder slammed President Donald Trump, calling him a “bully” who disregards other points of view.
  • Biden has launched a campaign called “Republicans for Biden” that aimed to empower GOP voters to vote for him for the upcoming election.

On Thursday, former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, said that he supports the candidacy of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. He argued that Biden would “bring back civility” to the country and bring “Americans closer together.”

“He has shown the desire to heal a deeply divided nation; has demonstrated strong moral character and empathy, and he seems willing to listen to people who have different perspectives from his own,” Snyder wrote in an op-ed in USA Today.

A past executive from the computer industry who always introduced himself as “one tough nerd” when speaking to voters during his first election run, Snyder slammed President Donald Trump, calling him a “bully” who does not acknowledge ideas contrary to his.

“Being strong is standing up for your convictions. Being a bully is trying to intimidate those who are perceived to be weaker or a threat. As a proud nerd, I had to deal with bullies over many years; it is tragedy watching our world suffer from one,” Snyder wrote.

Synder was part of almost 100 GOP and independent leaders who are anticipated to endorse Biden, Reuters reported on Thursday.

In recent weeks, the former vice president’s campaign highlighted bilateral support for his presidential run. His team broadcasted series of endorsements from GOP leaders and past Trump officials. It coincided with the endorsement of over two dozen previous GOP lawmakers.

Last week, Biden’s campaign launched a group “Republicans for Biden,” a move to empower Biden’s supporters from the GOP side to ally for the upcoming election. The assembly includes Christine Todd Whitman and former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld.

All the three most recent Michigan governors had endorsed Biden for the presidency. Aside from Snyder, both Democrats, former Governor Jennifer Granholm, and incumbent Governor Gretchen Whitmer also expressed their support for Biden during Michigan’s presidential primary last March.

However, some Democrats were not welcoming Snyder’s endorsement since he messed up on the Flint water crisis.
