  • Kanye West announced his bid for the presidency in a surprise Fourth of July tweet.
  • It is still unclear if West is serious about his announcement or if it’s even possible to still make it onto the 2020 ballot.

Kanye West has been famously vocal about his support for U.S. President Donald Trump, but the rapper announced his own bid for the presidency on Saturday.

West tweeted, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States,” along with an American flag emoji and the hashtag “#2020VISION.”

It is still unclear if West is serious about making it onto the 2020 ballot, or if it’s even possible. There are less than four months left before the Nov. 3 election. It’s also unclear if he had already filed any official paperwork.

In many states, the deadline to add independent candidates to the ballot has not yet passed.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is also known for eccentric outbursts, endorsed West’s Twitter post, tweeting, “You have my full support!”

While several people dismissed West’s announcement, others expressed concerns that he might pull votes from presumptive Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden. This would split the vote and ensure President Trump’s reelection — which they theorized might be the rapper’s true agenda.

West had previously visited Trump in the White House, proudly wearing a “Make America Great Again” red hat.
