Clear Facts

  • Hermantown Community School in Minnesota gave students a geography lesson portraying ICE agents as using “tricky & violent tactics.”
  • The PowerPoint presentation and an extra credit video promoted negative perspectives of ICE and U.S. immigration enforcement.
  • Defending Education criticized the lesson as political indoctrination, while the principal defended it as aligning with state standards.

Eighth-grade students at Hermantown Community School received a geography class lesson stating that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents used harsh tactics, with slides describing incidents of violence and improper actions.

The classroom materials included a PowerPoint and a British-produced video, both critical of how the United States handles illegal immigration.

One slide asked students, “In what ways do people think the Ice agents have ‘gone too far’?” and claimed, “ICE agents use tricky & violent tactics.”

It detailed accusations of ICE arresting legal immigrants and U.S. citizens, as well as harsh detention conditions like overcrowding and lack of medical care.

Another slide argued, “The government said they were going to focus on undocumented CRIMINALS, but they are actually deporting mostly otherwise law-abiding undocumented people.”

Middle School Principal William Wietman said, “All of our social studies classes have a current events component to them and this information is part of the MN standards in geography.”

Nicole Neily, president of Defending Education, responded, “It’s bad enough that this biased lesson is replete with falsehoods — but [for] the school principal to defend such garbage truly adds insult to injury.”

Neily continued, “Students are being force-fed ideological propaganda during finite lesson time… and told what to think, rather than how to think.”

Students could also watch a 19-minute video from Channel 4 News for extra credit, where the host claimed detainees were denied “due process” and criticized President Trump’s immigration policies.

The video alleged, “President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration could ‘forever’ change ‘America’s reputation as the land of the free’” and argued most undocumented immigrants are not criminals.

One slide linked to an anti-Trump video that praised diversity in America and referenced the nation’s large immigrant population as a benefit.

The school describes its curriculum as “antiracist” and “culturally sustaining,” emphasizing efforts to integrate practices of communities of color and eliminate racism from education.
