A disagreement over a parking spot in Philadelphia’s Kensington area escalated into violence Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.
Police reported that the fight involved a 21-year-old and a 45-year-old, drawing attention after both men armed themselves but ultimately fought without using their weapons.
At one point, officials said a 36-year-old woman armed herself, struck the older man, and then discharged her firearm into the ground.
The 45-year-old man sustained head injuries and remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Everyone involved was taken into custody, though authorities say no charges have been filed as the investigation is ongoing.
Philadelphia police reminded residents that saving parking spots—often called “savesies”—is illegal and can have serious consequences.
“It’s very disturbing,” said Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp. “That’s why we do take this seriously. Even though it seems like it’s not that serious of an issue, unfortunately, over the years we’ve seen some really tragic results.”
Sergeant Gripp also emphasized that no one owns public parking spaces, even those that have been shoveled out.
“It’s not your parking spot. You don’t own it. But also think about it: if someone is parking in your spot, there’s a good chance they had to shovel out a spot of their own,” said Gripp.
