Clear Facts

  • The Trump Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will close for about two years starting July 4th for renovations, as announced by President Donald Trump.
  • The president recommended a full closure after a year-long review by contractors and advisors, emphasizing higher quality and faster completion.
  • He stated that financing for the project is complete, and the board, which Trump chairs, must still give final approval.

The Trump Kennedy Center will shut its doors completely for renovations beginning Independence Day. President Trump explained that keeping the center closed will ensure a better result and finish the project sooner.

“[I]f we don’t close, the quality of Construction will not be nearly as good, and the time to completion, because of interruptions with Audiences from the many Events using the Facility, will be much longer. The temporary closure will produce a much faster and higher quality result!”

The closure is pending final board approval. Trump recently restructured the board, leading to changes at the center, including the removal of events based on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Last week’s unveiling of “Melania,” a documentary about the first lady, marked a shift in the center’s programming.

“The Trump Kennedy Center will close on July 4th, 2026, in honor of the 250th Anniversary of our Country, whereupon we will simultaneously begin Construction of the new and spectacular Entertainment Complex,” the president wrote.

He confirmed all funding is arranged, though the source remains undisclosed.

“This important decision, based on input from many Highly Respected Experts, will take a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center, one that has been in bad condition, both financially and structurally for many years, and turn it into a World Class Bastion of Arts, Music, and Entertainment, far better than it has ever been before. America will be very proud of its new and beautiful Landmark for many generations to come,” the president said.

The board’s changes have resulted in some performers ending participation, such as the Washington National Opera, which transitioned out in January.
