WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack withdrew a subpoena it issued to former president Donald Trump in October.
  • The probe has wrapped up and Republicans are set to take control of the House in January.
  • Trump took to Truth Social with a message: “They probably did so because they knew I did nothing wrong, or they were about to lose in Court.”

The House Jan. 6 select committee withdrew a subpoena it issued to former President Donald Trump in October as the investigation wrapped up and the panel set to disband.

Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, a Democrat, notified Trump’s lawyers on Wednesday as the panel prepares to disband, according to a report.  This means the former president no longer needs to comply with document requests, CNN reported.

“In light of the imminent end of our investigation, the Select Committee can no longer pursue the specific information covered by the subpoena,” Thompson wrote to Trump’s attorneys obtained by CNN.

“Therefore, through this letter, I hereby formally withdraw the subpoena issued to former President Trump, and notify you that he is no longer obligated to comply or produce records in response to said subpoena,” Thompson added.

In October, the Jan. 6 committee sought documents and testimony from Trump related to its investigation into attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump sued the committee in November in an effort to block the subpoena and keep him from testifying.

The select committee released its final report last week, detailing evidence compiled by the panel relating to one of the most consequential events in U.S. history.

The new Republican-controlled Congress convenes on Jan. 3 as a number of subpoenas related to other witnesses have also been withdrawn, according to CNN

Trump celebrated the withdrawn subpoena to slam the panel on his social media platform.

“Was just advised that the Unselect Committee of political Thugs has withdrawn the Subpoena of me concerning the January 6th Protest of the CROOKED 2020 Presidential Election,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social page.

“They probably did so because they knew I did nothing wrong, or they were about to lose in Court. Perhaps the FBI’s involvement in RIGGING the Election played into their decision. In any event, the Subpoena is DEAD!” Trump gloated.

Earlier this month, the Jan. 6 committee referred Trump to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution on four criminal charges — conspiracy to make a false statement, conspiracy to defraud the United States, inciting an insurrection, and obstruction of an official proceeding.

What is probably, or more accurately, known by the January 6th committee is that Trump would lie once again and they didn’t want to give him a national platform to perpetrate another lie on top of the 87,000 or so lies already documented against the crooked former president.
