WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump accused Democrat governors on Monday for delaying their states’ reopening for political purposes.
  • While Trump was claiming that Democrat governors are moving too slowly, a recent survey poll from Yahoo News/YouGov said otherwise — only eight percent of Americans said the reopening is “too slow.”
  • The president also accused Democratic governors of wanting his administration “to be unsuccessful, which means death.”

President Donald Trump on Monday accused Democratic governors of delaying the reopening of their states to blow his reelection bid. He did not provide any evidence, though.

In his tweet, the president called out Pennsylvania, where officials in four counties have warned to disregard Governor Tom Wolf’s stay-at-home order which was extended until June 4 for most areas of the state.

“The great people of Pennsylvania want their freedom now, and they are fully aware of what that entails. The Democrats are moving slowly, all over the USA, for political purposes. They would wait until November 3rd if it were up to them. Don’t play politics. Be safe, move quickly!,” the president tweeted on Monday.

Currently, Pennsylvania has almost 60,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 3,700 fatalities.

In a radio interview on Monday, Wolf warned to sanction county officials who will violate his orders.

“These folks are choosing to desert in the face of the enemy, in the middle of a war we Pennsylvanians are winning,” Wolf said. “They need to understand the consequences of their cowardly act.”

While Trump claims that Democrat governors are moving “too slowly,” most people disagree. A recent poll by Yahoo News/YouGov showed 59% of Americans believed states such as Georgia, Florida, Minnesota and Texas are “moving too fast” to reopen. Only 33% claimed the pace is “about right” while only eight percent believed it’s “too slow.”

Public health experts, which include members of the White House coronavirus task force, have cautioned on reopening the country immediately as it could lead to more fatalities and worse economic turmoil.

Trump blamed Democrats for prolonging the reopening of economy to hurt him, he also accused them of wanting more Americans to die, which would also make him look bad — an accusation that originally came from Donald Trump Jr., his son.

“The House is a bunch of Trump haters,” the president told reporters before departing for Arizona last week. “They, frankly, want our situation to be unsuccessful, which means death. Which means death.”

There have been more than 1.3 million recorded COVID-19 cases in the US and over 79,000 deaths — highest in the world.
