Clear Facts

  • A 33-year-old German man was arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire broke out at the Eagle’s Nest mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps.
  • Authorities report the suspect displayed signs of mental illness and has been transferred to a psychiatric facility.
  • Officials have not ruled out a possible political motive given the site’s historical significance.

The fire occurred Friday evening at the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, located more than 6,000 feet above sea level in the Bavarian Alps. Firefighters responded quickly but faced difficult conditions due to strong winds.

The suspect was observed heading down the mountain on a motorcycle before his arrest. The Eagle’s Nest is a popular tourist destination that operates seasonally as a restaurant and includes an exhibit on its history.

“We’re not going to leave a ruin there,” Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told reporters at Eagle’s Nest.

“I think we will be able to find a sensible solution.”

He added: “It is important that we continue to do the work of remembrance.”

No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire.

I visited this extraordinary site years ago, and will never forget its extraordinary views and historical significane. Hitler never lived there, and only used it limited times. It must be restored.
