Clear Facts
- The Trump administration is freezing $510 million in grants to Brown University to review its response to anti-semitism and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies.
- The Department of Education previously warned 60 institutions, including Brown, about fulfilling obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students.
- Similar funding freezes have been implemented at Princeton University and other institutions over concerns of antisemitism and discrimination.
The Trump administration has taken decisive action by freezing $510 million in grants to Brown University. This move is part of a broader review of how the institution addresses anti-semitism and its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies.
Earlier this year, the Education Department, under President Trump, cautioned 60 universities, including Brown, that they must adhere to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This act mandates the protection of Jewish students on campus. Brown is under “ongoing monitoring” due to a previous federal civil rights investigation.
A federal official explained that the funds will remain paused during the review process, similar to actions taken against Princeton University. “The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions,” stated Secretary of Education Linda McMahon in a letter from February.
McMahon emphasized the importance of compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws, noting that public investments in U.S. colleges and universities are a privilege.
Brown University is not alone in facing scrutiny. Just this week, $210 million in funding to Princeton University was halted as the administration investigates similar concerns. An investigation into Princeton’s handling of anti-semitism complaints dates back to the Biden administration, triggered by a civil rights complaint.
The Trump administration has also taken action against other universities. It recently withdrew $175 million from the University of Pennsylvania over issues related to gender sports policies. Additionally, Columbia University saw a $400 million funding freeze until it complied with demands regarding its handling of antisemitism complaints.

Too many progressive organizations adhere to the “rules for thee, but not for me” doctrine. I happy to see them finally being held to some standards. Do what you want, but don’t expect the rest of us to pay for it.
