WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Trump said former President Obama’s connection in the FBI investigation into the alleged Russia interference in the 2016 presidential election is “spying.”
  • Former New York federal prosecutor and legal analyst Elie Honig says Trump’s claim is “petty and ridiculous” as all wiretaps were court-approved and that Obama had nothing to do with the investigation.
  • The Durham probe is not a criminal investigation on both Obama and VP Biden.

“Treason. Treason. It’s treason,” that’s what President Trump said in an interview with CBN News regarding former President Obama’s connection in the investigation of Trump’s 2016 campaign contacts with Russia.

The president told CBN News’s David Brody, “They’d been spying on my campaign, “Turned out I was right. Let’s see what happens to them now.”

US Attorney John Durham is currently investigating the origins of the Russia Probe which has been shadowing the Trump administration for its first two years.

The probe pertains to the investigations on Trump’s campaign associates made by FBI agents regarding alleged Russia’s interference in the election in 2016.  Trump has always considered it as a “witch hunt” and considers the FBI as biased.

However, last year, a Justice Department Inspector general report found that the FBI was not biased and that it had adequate predicate.

Former New York federal prosecutor and legal analyst Elie Honig said that Trump’s claim about Obama is “petty and ridiculous” as all the wiretaps were court-approved. President Obama had nothing to do with the taps, and that treason only applies during a declared war.

After calling US Attorney John Durham as “highly respected” and praising Attorney General William Barr and looking forward to the investigation’s results, he said he’s staying out of the Durham probe or otherwise it is going to look political.

“Let’s see what they come up with,” Trump added.

When asked to comment about the Durham probe in May, Barr did not expect a criminal investigation of either former President Obama or Vice President Joe Biden and that concern over potential criminality is focused on others and not on Obama and Biden.

Barr expects developments of the Durham probe sometime this summer.
