South Dakota Ranchers Push Back On Trump Beef Import Policy Amid Rounds Re-election Bid

Clear Facts
- South Dakota cattle producers are voicing concerns over increased beef imports linked to Trump administration trade policies.
- Senator Mike Rounds faces pressure from ranchers who say the imports threaten local livestock operations.
- State agricultural leaders report that import volumes have risen during the current presidential term.
South Dakota cattle ranchers are expressing frustration with federal trade policies they believe are undercutting domestic beef production. The state’s livestock industry has long relied on stable prices and secure market access for its operations.
Senator Mike Rounds, who is seeking another term, is facing questions from constituents about his stance on the import issue. Several producers have publicly stated that the policy direction is creating economic strain in rural communities.
“His association with Trump is not good,” said one South Dakota rancher who asked to remain unnamed due to ongoing contract negotiations. The comment reflects broader sentiment among some agricultural voters who feel federal decisions are prioritizing international trade over domestic producers.
State agricultural officials note that import levels have increased significantly over the past year. This trend has prompted discussions about how trade agreements affect the viability of family-run ranches across the Great Plains.
Rounds has defended his record on agricultural issues during recent campaign stops. He points to legislative efforts aimed at supporting rural economies and maintaining strong farm programs.
Local cattle associations continue to monitor the situation closely as election season intensifies. Their members are weighing the balance between trade policy benefits and the immediate challenges facing domestic beef producers.

This hurts! American cattle producers have been disadvantaged for far too long. What our market really needs is a stable, America-First national policy that promotes American beef rather than continuing to import foreign beef as a quick “fix.” This instability harms hardworking American ranchers and consumers who want American-made beef. This is the exact opposite approach we take compared to manufacturing, and it doesn’t make sense. Now more than ever, we need Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. Opening the market to even more foreign beef, which American consumers cannot differentiate because of current labeling rules, will only exacerbate the problem and hurt domestic producers. Our producers will compete all day long, but only if there is a level playing field. Beef prices will come down when American ranchers have a greater ability to supply more product. There isn’t a silver bullet but MCOOL and the RANCH Act are common sense solutions.
