“I’ve been injured before, those are things that I do in my personal time,” Marte told reporters.

When directly asked if he had a message for Arizona fans who ultimately pay his substantial salary, Marte simply shook his head no and offered complete silence.

The Diamondbacks find themselves in an impossible position. At 73-65 and battling for a Wild Card berth, they desperately need Marte’s production at the plate—he’s hitting .249 with 21 home runs this season. More problematic for team management: Marte is locked into a contract running through 2031 with full no-trade protection, giving him complete leverage over the organization.
