New Trump Policy Targets Foreign Control of U.S. Farmland

Clear Facts
- The Trump administration has introduced the National Farm Security Action Plan to protect American farmland from foreign adversaries.
- China has acquired significant amounts of American farmland, totaling 338,000 acres in 2020.
- The USDA aims to prevent Chinese nationals from purchasing American farmland and to terminate agreements with foreign adversaries.
In a significant move to safeguard American agriculture, the Trump administration has unveiled the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Farm Security Action Plan. This initiative aims to protect American farmland from foreign adversaries, with a particular focus on curbing China’s expansive land acquisitions.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized the critical nature of this plan, stating that it involves legislative and executive actions at both state and federal levels. The goal is to shield farmland, bolster agriculture research, and defend against intellectual property theft. Rollins highlighted the alarming fact that China had purchased 338,000 acres of American farmland by 2020.
“American agriculture is not just about feeding our families but about protecting our Nation and standing up to foreign adversaries who are buying our farmland, stealing our research, and creating dangerous vulnerabilities in the very systems that sustain us,” Rollins declared during the announcement.
The plan was introduced at a press conference in Washington, D.C., with several key cabinet members present, including the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security, and Attorney General. They were joined by members of Congress to underline the bipartisan support for this initiative.
The USDA, alongside other agencies, is set to block Chinese nationals from purchasing American farmland. Rollins explained that the department would also terminate agreements with entities in countries deemed adversarial. “Too much American land is owned by nationals of adversarial countries, and more than 265,000 acres in the United States are owned by Chinese nationals, much of which is located near American military bases,” she noted.
The urgency of these measures is underscored by recent events, such as the Department of Justice charging two Chinese nationals with smuggling a fungus classified as a bioweapon. This fungus had the potential to devastate American crops and livestock. Additionally, China has been implicated in the theft of billions in intellectual property from the U.S., with estimates ranging between $180 billion and $540 billion in 2018.
The conference reiterated the sentiment that “food security is national security,” a point stressed by both the Secretary of Defense and Rollins. The plan represents a decisive step in fortifying the nation’s agricultural sector against foreign threats, ensuring that American farmland remains under American control.

Previous Presidents have Allowed Chiina to purchase all this lane. The American President knew nothing about this ( as Usual). Poisioning our land & also large amounts of real Estate. They ALREADY have ALL they need! After all these years. You can stop it now, But China has made very good use of this long Going situation. Especially , near our Military Bases, & farmland. The United States Allowed ALL this! Now they wake up! Too much to LATE!!!!

I am old enough to remember when it was illegal for a Chinaman to own property. This was the law in several states. It was also illegal for a woman to own property or have a bank account of her own, unless she was a widow. All those laws were eventually deemed unfair and were cancelled

Thank you President Trump for finally taking steps not only to stop the purchase of farmland by adversary foreign nationals but for including the revocation of any previous sales. Governors should have been the first to ban these sales but blue state governors would never stop it because China makes it worth their while. Every purchase should be deeply investigated because the Chinese also will use surrogates to make the purchases when they can. Any governor that allows property to be purchased by citizens of adversarial foreign nationals should be removed from office physically if necessary.

Any property in the US should be American owned always. If farmers have problems, their state governments ought to help out.

My opinion. Our federal govt should also give foreign advesaries 60 days to sell any property or businesses they own in the US. After 60 days, seize those properties and auction them off to American citizens.

Why can’t Eminent Domain be used in this situation. That’s supposed to be used only for the public good; and what could benefit us more than NOT having the Chinese own so much farmland, specialty surrounding our military bases (think about the 2 Chinese just arrested sneaking things to ruin our crops just a couple weeks ago.) it wasn’t that long ago that Biden let a Chinese spy balloon cross completely across the entire nation. It wasn’t just drifting aimlessly either, but was in a pattern of hovering and flying circuits around military facilities. It’s frightening to think of the information they got, and how our own government let them complete their journey, and transmit all their data, before shooting it down after it was past the border.
