“I stand by the work of my office and the decisions we made,” Smith stated during the hearing.
Committee Republicans raised questions about the timing of the cases and the resources spent on the investigations.
“The American people deserve answers about why these cases were brought and whether they served justice or politics,” said one GOP senator during the exchange.
Smith responded that the charges were filed after careful review of the facts and the law.
“These cases were not about politics. They were about the rule of law,” Smith told the committee.
Republican lawmakers also questioned whether the prosecutions undermined public trust in the justice system.
Smith countered that his team followed established procedures and treated the former president the same as any other citizen under investigation.
