President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday. The two discussed cost of living and housing issues.

Trump told reporters that he wants Mamdani to be a great mayor and believes he has great potential. The president patted Mamdani on the back after the meeting.

“I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential,” Trump said.

Less than two weeks earlier, Trump told Republicans at the party’s midterm convention that communists have taken over the Democratic Party.

“In state after state, the Democrat establishment has been overthrown and replaced by crazed lunatics and radicals,” Trump stated. “They call themselves Democrat socialists, but actually, they’re communists.”

The meeting has drawn criticism from some Republican strategists who see it as off-message.

“All of it is self-inflicted, off-message, not helpful,” one GOP strategist told Fox News Digital.

Another consultant described Trump as being in a “fully self-indulgent period” that does not appear focused on winning elections.

Right-wing activist Laura Loomer expressed strong disapproval on social media.

“I am a die hard Trump supporter and today I am feeling demoralized because Mamdani is a full blown communist jihadist,” Loomer wrote.

She added that the base was told to fight communism, yet the communist appears to be rewarded.

“How is this supposed to make Trump’s most loyal supporters feel? We don’t feel very happy today,” Loomer stated.

Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz defended the meeting on X.

“I don’t understand the ‘Republicans’ who are upset about the President having a friendly relationship with the Mayor of New York,” Bruesewitz wrote.

Republican consultant Dave Carney downplayed concerns, noting that the president must work with city officials regardless of political differences.

Longtime strategist Ryan Williams suggested the praise reflects Trump’s appreciation for political talent rather than ideological agreement.
