Oakland Dismantles Traffic Lights Amidst Crime Surge, Citizens Feel Abandoned

Published

Clear Facts

  • Oakland, California, a city grappling with increasing crime and theft, has removed traffic lights from a major intersection due to persistent incidents of copper wire theft.
  • The city’s efforts to protect its infrastructure, such as using cement barriers to secure electrical boxes, proved futile, leading to this drastic measure.
  • Tam Le, a local business owner, and others attribute the problem in part to a large homeless encampment nearby, asserting that the city’s current approach signifies an abandonment of its citizens.

As crime surges in Oakland, California, it’s the traffic lights that have become the latest casualty. Due to an alarming increase in thefts, specifically of copper wires, the city has resorted to dismantling the traffic lights at a critical intersection. This radical move comes after futile efforts to protect its infrastructure, including an unsuccessful attempt to secure electrical boxes with cement barriers.

The decision, however, is seen by locals as an abdication of civic responsibility.

“It’s just telling us that the city is giving up on us,” Tam Le, owner of Le’s Auto Body & Engine Repair, located near the contentious intersection.

Despite temporary traffic lights being replaced with stop signs, locals fear the situation is spiraling out of control. The tampering and theft had previously caused the traffic lights to work sporadically, raising safety concerns. Mason Young, a local resident, pointed to an accident that recently happened at the intersection, implying that the city’s stopgap solutions were inadequate.

“We gotta stop just putting band-aids on things. Although, a band-aid is better than bleeding out,” Young said.

The city’s crime rate is up by 22%, including a nearly 10% increase in commercial burglary, according to the most recent police data.

In response to the escalating crime, more than 200 business owners closed their shops in September as a form of protest against the government’s handling of public safety. The demonstration came right after city officials admitted they had missed a deadline to apply for state funding to combat retail theft.

In an attempt to revive city commerce, Oakland’s leaders have initiated a grant program. This funding is aimed at supporting small business owners in hosting events, such as workout classes, musical performances, and movie nights, to attract customers to local shops that have seen dwindling patronage due to rising crime.

As of now, the stop signs are a temporary solution. However, no concrete timeline has been provided as to when the traffic lights will be reinstated. As the situation continues to evolve, the citizens of Oakland are left awaiting a more effective response from their city officials.

The leaders of Oakland apparently are incompetent to handle the situation as needed. You need new leaders with the courage to enforce laws and protect the citizens. Disgraceful.

Could it possibly be the result of all those illegals your governor has encouraged to go to your state?

That city has been a cess pool for many years. This is over simplification a bit, but not by much. As long as you/they expect positive results by electing Democrats with their “feel good policies” that encourage very bad behavior they will remain in the toilet. It is also and ties right in with voting Democrat. Newsom is a very liberal, very in competent Democrat and supports open borders. And he gives them more benefits than the Americans that live in Ca.

Where is the copper wire going? Do
They not have laws regarding scrap yards and registering they are buying from? Ridiculous they can’t get a handle on the thefts including the use of cameras.

This is typical for cities that are controlled by democrats, they don’t have the guts or the will to stop this criminal behavior and if one of these business owners should happen to take it upon themselves to stop these criminals they are the ones prosecuted, there are only two ways to stop this one vote in competent people which I don’t think will happen or for we the people to rise up and take charge also probably will not happen so all I I can say is deal with it.

What is the answer. Unfortunately, it’s resolve or revolution. Both time and patience are growing short.

Judging by the quality of the citizens and leadership, I’m not surprised

My first thought is why have the city no installed cameras to moniter what and who are doing this. Second thought don’t the police know how to take finger prints? Third thought is when are the people in California going to wake up and vote their problems out of office. You get what you vote for.
