Wisconsin Amusement Park Horror: Roller Coaster Malfunction Leaves Children Upside-Down for Hours

Knowledge Nuggets:
- A roller coaster malfunction at the Forest County Festival in Crandon, Wisconsin, left seven children and one adult hanging upside-down for more than four hours, leading to a significant rescue effort.
- The City of Antigo Fire Department was called in to assist the trapped riders. Notably, one young girl asked rescuers to first help an older man, demonstrating remarkable bravery amid the crisis.
- All eight individuals were taken to the hospital for observation. The roller coaster had recently been inspected by the state of Wisconsin, raising questions about the efficacy of safety protocols and inspections.
A Sunday outing at the Forest County Festival in Crandon, Wisconsin, turned into a frightening ordeal for seven children and one adult.
They were left hanging upside-down for over four hours when the amusement park’s Fireball roller coaster experienced a significant mechanical failure.
A 40-minute journey was required for the City of Antigo Fire Department to reach the scene, given its distance of about 40 miles from the park.
Firefighter/EMT Erica Kostichka recalled the intense build-up of anticipation during their drive.
“The ride had malfunctioned and we had people who were upside down,” she recounted.
Kostichka, who was among the first responders assisting the distressed riders off the roller coaster, commended their bravery.
She noted, “You know a lot of [the kids] you could tell, their legs were shaking, they were sweating, and it was just a matter of letting them know, ‘Hey this is no race to get down to the finish line, the hard part is over.'”
Captain Brennan Cook of the Crandon Fire Department reported, “All we know is that there is a mechanical failure with the ride where it became stuck in the upright position. The ride was recently inspected by the state of Wisconsin here on site and at this time, we do not have any other information.”
The incident was marked by some remarkable displays of courage.
According to witness Scott Brass, who was on hand to capture the scene on video, a young girl on the ride insisted rescuers first assist an older man.
He emphatically stated, “That little girl deserves a medal of courage for sure.”
The Forest County Festival was started by the local community at the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway a few years ago.
The Forest County Potawatomi Community hosts the festival with free rides, according to Chairman James Crawford.
His sentiment, “This is just a great way to give back to the local community. Let families get out and play together and be together,” underscores the somber tone the event has now adopted.
For now, the unfortunate eight riders were taken to the hospital for observation.
The incident underscores the importance of stringent maintenance and inspection procedures for all amusement rides to ensure public safety.

Ugh! What a horrible scenario! Here’s hoping that the children and the older man caught on this roller coaster when they were stuck upside down for more than four hours are all right, and unharmed. It’s disgraceful that these rides in amusement parks are so poorly monitored and maintained.

Defects in the mechanics of such rides can and sometimes do get past inspection control, or they’re not thoroughly enough inspected. That could cause problems, and result in riders being seriously injured, or even killed. More frequent and more thorough inspections of these rides, especially roller-coasters and other rides that involve fast up and down hill moving, and the thorough fixing what’s wrong with the mechanisms of the ride, and/or closing down any such rides until certain parts are replaced, and better repairs take place, as well. There is absolutely no excuse for letting rides that are used by the public for amusement get to the point where they’re totally unsafe for the public to use.
