Clear Facts

  • Angel Reese wore a “Protect Black women” T-shirt while entering the Chase Center for Game 5 of the WNBA Finals.
  • Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries players declined to remain on the court for the national anthem before the game.
  • The WNBA moved Game 6 tip-off to 12:30 p.m. ET due to a scheduling conflict at State Farm Arena.

Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese arrived at the Chase Center wearing a T-shirt reading “Protect Black women.” The statement drew attention during Game 5 of the WNBA Finals against the Golden State Valkyries.

Reese has previously voiced opinions on social issues. Her choice of attire raised questions about the message the league wants to project during its championship series.

“I don’t think I’ve been on the floor for the national anthem for any of my tenure in Atlanta, so if that’s what people are gonna look to nitpick for then so be it,” Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard told OutKick.

Howard added that she stands for the anthem when representing the United States in a USA jersey.

Golden State head coach Natalie Nakase confirmed that leaving the court before the anthem has been standard practice for her franchise since entering the league.

The decision by both teams to exit the floor before the national anthem continued a pattern of declining traditional pregame respect for the flag.

“Yes, I love the country that I play for and I love what we have here,” Howard stated.

Additional scheduling confusion emerged when the league moved Game 6 to an early afternoon start time rather than securing a different venue.

The combination of political messaging, anthem protocol, and logistical issues has created an atmosphere far removed from the unity typically associated with championship competition.
