Clear Facts

  • Spencer Pratt criticized Mayor Karen Bass for her historical connections to pro-Castro organizations in Cuba.
  • Bass served as a leader for the Venceremos Brigade, which the FBI linked to weapons training and domestic radicals.
  • Polling data shows Pratt gaining ground in the Los Angeles mayoral race while many voters remain undecided.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt redirected questions about his television past to highlight Mayor Karen Bass’s decades of controversial activism. Pratt argued his background in entertainment is preferable to his opponent’s record of praising Fidel Castro and visiting Cuba many times.

"The reality, pun intended, is that was from 20 years ago," Pratt said during an interview with FOX 11.

"And if we look at what Karen Bass was doing 20 years ago, she was in Cuba learning how to make bombs with the people that would then go bomb Capitol Hill."

Bass joined the Venceremos Brigade at age 19, an organization that sent American leftists to support the Cuban regime. Reports indicate the FBI investigated the group for ties to Cuban intelligence and domestic terrorist organizations like the Weather Underground.

Pratt contrasted his own career with what he described as a legacy of anti-American involvement by the incumbent mayor.

"I’m pretty proud of what I was doing at 20 on reality television. Even though it was, you know, I may not have been the most likable character, it was still TV versus trying to destroy America and going to Cuba 20 times and praising Fidel Castro."

Bass previously admitted to making eight trips to Cuba during the 1970s and faced criticism for calling Castro’s death a great loss. She later walked back those remarks after they drew national scrutiny during her rise in mainstream politics.

Pratt entered the race following the loss of his home in the Palisades Fire, running on a platform of fiscal accountability. He currently holds 14% of the vote as he pledges to audit homeless spending and reform city emergency commissions.
