Maryland women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese had a heated moment with guard Oluchi Okananwa during Sunday’s tournament loss. The exchange came after Okananwa struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities in the third quarter.
Frese met the player on the sideline to demand more focus and drive in the critical postseason game. The coach said elite competitors thrive under demanding leadership styles.
“I believe in you, but you got to want this moment,” Frese said.
Okananwa responded positively, finishing with 21 points and six rebounds. She later expressed appreciation for Frese’s direct and challenging approach.
“Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart. I’ve told her this before, and I’ll keep on telling her this forever. I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day,” Okananwa told reporters.
Frese said her tough conversations are built on strong relationships with her players. She said she wanted to challenge the gifted guard to push through her struggles.
“At that moment, I watched Oluchi struggle within this tournament. She’s just too gifted, so I wanted to implore how much belief I have in her and challenge her,” Frese added.
The Terrapins ended their season with a 74-66 defeat against the Tar Heels. Okananwa’s performance reinforced her status as a top competitor after her All-Big Ten Conference selection.
