Judge Blocks Key Provision in Trump Health Bill
Clear Facts
- A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction halting enforcement of a provision in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act that would strip Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood in 22 states.
- U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani ruled the law may be unconstitutional and paused her injunction for seven days, allowing the administration to appeal.
- The decision preserves Medicaid funds for Planned Parenthood in Massachusetts and Utah while legal battles continue.
A federal judge paused a major part of President Trump’s health bill that sought to remove Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood across 22 states.
This means the law will not take effect right away, giving the administration time to consider an appeal.
Judge Indira Talwani, who was appointed by former President Obama, sided with Democratic attorneys general who argued the bill unfairly targeted states and providers after the fact.
Talwani’s ruling protects Planned Parenthood groups in Massachusetts and Utah from losing Medicaid money, at least for now.
The court originally extended a restraining order in July and is now preserving current funding as the legal case unfolds.
Planned Parenthood told the court the law would disrupt medical care for Medicaid patients.
The judge ordered Planned Parenthood to post a $100 bond and kept the order in place until at least July 21 unless there is a new ruling.
This is a temporary pause as the courts decide whether the law will stand.
For the moment, Planned Parenthood receives continued Medicaid payments due to the decision.
