Former San Jose State volleyball player Brooke Slusser endured vicious online attacks for voicing discomfort sharing a bed with a man.

Years after publicly opposing the biological male on her women’s team, Slusser detailed daily roommate experiences that shattered trust in coaches and administrators.

“I honestly think what struck the biggest nerve is this is really the first time I’ve like sat and talked about just kind of like a day to day point of view, like, yes, we were good friends, like we’d share very like intimate details about each of our lives, like that’s a normal roommate tendencies do in a girl’s apartment,” Slusser said.

She noticed odd behaviors like Fleming’s always-locked door but respected his stated privacy.

“His doors were always locked, that’s what I remember, because like I said, we were all very good friends, and so it’s very normal for girls just to like barge into each other’s rooms unannounced,” Slusser said. “We always had to knock, and I just thought that was weird, but I was like, if a person likes their privacy, I’m not gonna be the one to push a button.”

Slusser refuses to dwell on slurs labeling her a transphobe, focusing instead on shielding future female athletes from similar ordeals.

“They gaslit us so much, and the fact that like, if we spoke on this at all, even with like close family and friends, our scholarship would be in jeopardy,” Slusser said.

SJSU President Cynthia Teniente-Matson defended the lawsuit, claiming federal overreach despite clear Title IX violations.

Slusser called the university’s defiance blood-boiling, noting her senior season dreams were ruined by forfeits from teams rejecting the male player.
