Clear Facts

- Project totals 89,000 square feet, ballroom holds 1,000 guests for $400 million.

The National Capital Planning Commission held a virtual meeting Thursday to assess President Trump’s East Wing Modernization project. Architect Shalom Baranes presented updates addressing prior concerns on size and scale.
AECOM and Clark Construction lead the effort to expand White House facilities. Commissioners questioned public access, lighting, and accessibility features.
Baranes assured no solar panels or helicopter infrastructure on the ballroom roof.
Commissioner Phil Mendelson raised height concerns impacting East-West Wing balance. Baranes noted historical asymmetry from past expansions like the Eisenhower and Treasury buildings.
“In a sense, we have repeating of history here. Today there is an increasing need [of the White House] which cannot be met,” he said. “This is not a new question.”
“The White House should grow with the nation,” Commissioner Paul Ingrassia suggested.
Over 35,000 public comments arrived, mostly negative, alongside testimonies from critics including the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Republican Rep. Michael Turner expressed concerns over rapid East Wing demolition in a letter.
“You don’t have to choose between respecting our history for the American people and accommodating modern government’s needs. In the case of the East Wing Modernization Project, you can do both,” Carol Quillen stated.
Trump’s appointees faced recusal demands from activists like Public Citizen’s Jon Golinger.
The project weathers intense opposition, advancing America’s executive residence for future needs. Traditional growth honors national progress.
