Trump’s Unexpected DHS Appointment Sparks Bipartisan Blitz

Clear Facts
- President Trump appoints Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as new DHS Secretary effective March 31, 2026.
- Mullin replaces Kristi Noem, who becomes Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.
- Appointment requires Senate confirmation; Mullin plans bipartisan outreach.
President Donald Trump selected Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security. The move follows Kristi Noem’s transition to a key regional security envoy role.
Mullin admitted the White House call caught him off guard but filled him with enthusiasm. He aims to refocus DHS on protecting all Americans regardless of politics.
“I am super excited about this opportunity. It came, not as a complete surprise, but it came at a little bit of a surprise for us,” Mullin told reporters on the Capitol steps.
“I’ve got to be honest with you, I wasn’t expecting the call today. But super excited,” he continued.
The senator highlighted DHS’s broad responsibilities and pledged practical reforms. He expressed willingness to meet Senate Democrats like Chuck Schumer to address funding concerns.
“We’re going to try to earn everybody’s vote. I want people to understand, when I go into this position, yes, I’m a Republican, yes, I’m conservative, but the Department of Homeland Security is to keep everybody safe, regardless of if you support me or you don’t support me,” Mullin explained.
Mullin praised Noem as a friend and capable leader despite challenges. Noem will now partner with Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth to combat cartels and manage migration.
This leadership shift strengthens Trump’s commitment to homeland security and traditional American safety priorities.
