US forces killed 3 ISIS leaders in Syria [Video]
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- U.S. forces conducted two separate military operations that killed three senior Islamic State leaders in Syria.
- A rare ground raid killed an IS insurgent known to smuggle weapons and fighters, while a later airstrike killed another IS leader and the No. 2 IS leader in Syria.
- An official said that it was the first time in a long time that the U.S. did not notify Russia of the U.S. troops’ presence and raid in the area.
Three senior Islamic State leaders were killed in two separate military operations conducted by U.S. forces in Syria on Thursday, U.S. officials stated.
The first operation included a rare ground raid in the northeastern part of the country that is controlled by the Syrian regime. The officials wished to remain anonymous since the U.S. rarely conducts missions on territory controlled by Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Officials said that a small number of U.S. troops conducted the ground raid near the village of Qamishli for less than an hour. They killed IS insurgent Rakkan Wahid al Shamman, wounded another insurgent, and captured two others. U.S. Central Command said that no U.S. troops or civilians were injured or killed in the raid.
According to U.S. Central Command, al Shamman has been known to facilitate the smuggle of weapons and fighters for the Islamic State.
In northern Syria, an airstrike killed the No. 2 Islamic State leader in Syria, Abu Ala, and another IS leader, Abu Mu’ad al Qahtani. Officials did not provide additional information about the airstrike.
Around 900 U.S. troops still remain in Syria to aid Syrian Democratic Forces against the Islamic State group.
A U.S. official, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that it was the first time in a long time that the U.S. did not use the deconfliction phone line to notify Russia of the U.S. troops’ presence and raid in the area. But the official clarified that the lack of communication was for operational security and not because of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
The deconfliction line between the U.S. and Russia has been used to announce the presence of U.S. forces in northeast Syria, where there are also Russian troops. The communication avoids any potential incidents or accidents.
