The weapon was discovered by Marcin Wiśniewski in the Gdańsk Forest District near the Baltic coast. Dating to the Late Bronze Age between 900 and 700 B.C., the sword represents a fascinating glimpse into Poland’s ancient past.

The Pomeranian Provincial Heritage Conservator announced the discovery on Facebook in early June. Photographs released by officials show the bronze weapon remarkably preserved, protruding from sandy soil during the excavation process.

Wiśniewski, who previously found a Bronze Age hoard in a forested area outside of Gdańsk, demonstrated responsible stewardship by immediately alerting heritage officials to his find.

“After the discovery was reported, staff from our Department of Archaeological Monuments recovered the artifact using proper archaeological methods, working together with the finder,” the Pomeranian Provincial Heritage Conservator’s translated post stated.

This discovery continues a pattern of Bronze Age weapons being found in the Gdańsk Forest District. Officials noted that the latest find is not the first of its kind in the region.

“In the 1920s, two antenna-hilt bronze swords were discovered in a peat bog at Rynarzewo,” the post explained.

“Those artifacts were transferred to the Provincial Museum in Gdańsk, but were lost during World War II.”

The loss of those earlier discoveries makes this new find even more significant for understanding the region’s Bronze Age history. Marcin Tymiński, press spokesperson for the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Gdańsk, confirmed that specialists will conduct detailed analysis once the weapon is transferred to a museum.

“The Provincial Heritage Conservator will decide which museum the sword will be transferred to,” Tymiński said in an email. “That decision has not yet been made.”

The mysterious circumstances of the sword’s position — standing upright after nearly three millennia — raises intriguing questions about how it came to be buried. Was it placed deliberately as part of a ritual or offering? Did shifting soil over thousands of years somehow position it vertically? These questions await answers from archaeological analysis.

While ancient weapon discoveries in Poland are relatively rare, the country has seen several notable finds in recent years. Late last year, archaeologists recovered a cache of early medieval weapons from a lake in west-central Poland, believed to be connected to the country’s first rulers.

Prior to that discovery, a 700-year-old medieval sword was pulled from Poland’s Vistula River by an angler who was expecting to catch fish instead.

The cooperation between amateur enthusiasts like Wiśniewski and professional archaeologists demonstrates how responsible metal detecting can contribute to our understanding of history. Rather than keeping his discovery private, Wiśniewski ensured the sword would be properly preserved and studied for the benefit of historical knowledge.

As specialists prepare to examine the weapon in detail, historians hope to learn more about the people who inhabited the Baltic coast region during the Late Bronze Age. The sword’s excellent preservation may yield valuable insights into ancient metalworking techniques and the culture of those who wielded such weapons.
